Ole Miss students hope to raise $35,100 for Feed the Hunger, an organization that provides food for thousands of starving children in Africa. The students will host a Pack-A-Thon on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the old Wal-Mart to package 135,000 servings of food that will be sent overseas.
Ole Miss is the first-ever college campus to get involved with Feed the Hunger. Feed the Hunger is a non-profit organization which is sponsored by the New Directions International. A group of girls went to Africa and were able to experience firsthand what these children’s lives were like. “The children started crying when they saw us. They wanted our clothes that we were wearing because they had no clothes,” Ali Phares said, a student at Ole Miss who visited Africa. Phares also said that the children were so hungry their stomachs were sticking so far out, and they were just begging for food.
Taylor Madison, an Ole Miss student who has assisted in organizing fundraisers for Feed the Hunger said, “Our goal is to have 700 volunteers turn out for the Pack-A-Thon. There is a lot of food that needs to be packaged in a short amount of time.” Molly Fudge, an Ole Miss student who is in charge of the Feed the Hunger fundraising money said, “The reason why we package the food ourselves is because there is so much fraud in other countries that if you send money they will keep it for themselves. We individually package the food for these children where it is then distributed by The New Directions International to the children at the schools. The reason why it’s distributed individually at the schools is because it will encourage the students to want to learn and get an education if they are able to be provided with food.”
The students need to raise $20,000 more to reach their goal. They have been able to raise money by selling t-shirts, sponsorships and donations. They had an event at The Library which had a cover charge and a raffle where they were able to raise $2,600. The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is also raising money through their fundraiser which will benefit Feed the Hunger. Many other fraternities and sororities on campus have gotten involved by giving donations. “It is great to see all these organizations getting involved because when you witness it firsthand all you want to do is express to everyone how much these children need our help,” Phares said.
We need all your help you can give, even if you can’t donate please just volunteer to help package these meals said Madison. We need to reach our goal so all these meals will be able to be packaged, shipped and delivered.
